Why is my 700W Mircowave using far more than 700W?

700W is the power that is being output by the microwave.

To generate 700W of microwave energy it must use more electrical energy - normally 1.2kW - 1.4kW.

If you are unsure if your energy monitor is working correctly, we encourage you to do the toaster test.

  • Find the power rating of your toaster (usually on a label on the bottom).
  • Look at your display
  • Turn the toaster on / slide it down so it starts to heat up

If everything is working correctly, the change in the reading on the display should be almost exactly the same as the power rating of the toaster.  This is because a toaster is a very simple device with a resistive load.
